What does being the "Official Blog Partner" of CES actually mean?

October 15th 2008

Engadget has been selected as the “Official Blog Partner” of CES. TechCrunch, among others, are viewing it less as a prize awarded to Engadget and more like a penalty against Gizmodo for the stunt it pulled last year.
It’s impossible to understand from the press release if extra access is to be granted to Engadget, but [...]

Asus Eee PC S101 is one slender, attractive netbook

October 4th 2008

The new Asus Eee PC S101 is my new favorite netbook that I probably still won’t buy. It’s gorgeous, but more than that, it’s tiny: 10.2-inch screen, less than 1 kilogram in weight (probably around 2 pounds), and only 1.8-centimeters thick. Before you ask: yup, that’s smaller and thinner than the MacBook Air.
The tech specs [...]

Joby Gorillapod Focus tripod holds up to 11 pounds of camera in precarious positions

September 26th 2008

Joby’s Gorillapod tripod is great. I’ve had one for years and it goes with me on every trip. It ably handles my DSLR and smaller camcorders. And it’s cheap!
The new Gorillapod “Focus” tripod is not cheap. It’s $150. But at 1.1-pounds it’s rated to handle up to 11 pounds of gear. That’s the size of [...]

No 3G in the iRex 1000 series Digital Reader

September 25th 2008

Earlier this week iRex launched the 1000 series Digital Reader device and I wondered if it actually replaces a printer as opposed to a notebook. Regardless of what it replaces, one thing it won’t have is 3G wireless broadband which some folks were claiming it would. I scoured the press release earlier this week and [...]

SanDisk adds a pair of high-speed, high-capacity Compact Flash cards

September 23rd 2008

What’s the best way to combat a press release that got a lukewarm reception at best? Put out two press releases the next day as a diversionary tactic. I’m just saying…
Oh, so the two press releases, what’s that all about? It’s all about SanDisk and Compact Flash. More geared towards digital SLR cameras, although we [...]

Audi supporting new traffic light/car communication system

September 19th 2008

Remember when you were a kid and there were all of those pictures in Popular Mechanics about cars that drove themselves and knew exactly where everybody else was so that wrecks never happened?
