Firefox Mobile almost here

October 7th 2008

I love Firefox but and have always wished I could have it running on my mobile devices.  Sure Opera Mobile is really good but it’s not Firefox.  Mozilla has been working on Firefox Mobile for a very long time, forever it seems, but word is coming out that a real alpha version is just weeks [...]

SSD tweaks to help Windows XP performance

October 7th 2008

Not too long ago I grabbed an Acer Aspire One to get a feel for the device performance. I was happy with it under Linux, but found the low-cost Intel Solid State Disk module to be a bottleneck with Windows XP. On the surface, the write speeds really struggled, especially with random writes. I’m fairly [...]

Five-second boot time demonstrated, sent to Moblin project

October 7th 2008

I might be in the minority when I say that mobile device boot time doesn’t matter, but I can’t help to notice this project. A few weeks ago, two Linux developers demonstrated a five-second boot time on an Asus Eee PC with Solid State Disk. The entire approach wasn’t to make a device boot faster, [...]

MSI Wind gets the Vista Ultimate treatment

October 6th 2008

Just a quick note before I actually drop off for a few hours. Over the weekend I decided to take a look at how well Microsoft Windows Vista does or doesn’t run on a netbook. Mac OS X was a nice little experiment and quite usable, but I remember thinking about early Intel Atom [...]

Asus Eee PC S101 is one slender, attractive netbook

October 4th 2008

The new Asus Eee PC S101 is my new favorite netbook that I probably still won’t buy. It’s gorgeous, but more than that, it’s tiny: 10.2-inch screen, less than 1 kilogram in weight (probably around 2 pounds), and only 1.8-centimeters thick. Before you ask: yup, that’s smaller and thinner than the MacBook Air.
The tech specs [...]

MSI Wind U90 reviewed- not so good

October 3rd 2008

The MSI Wind with the 10-inch screen is one of the top netbooks to beat so when MSI released the U90, the 8.9-inch brother it sounded pretty good.  Laptop Magazine has reviewed the U90 and basically say MSI screwed up a good thing.  The U90 uses the same chassis that the 10-inch Wind uses, [...]
