Review: Grocery store personal beeper thingy

August 31st 2008

This weekend, we tried one of those “personal shopping assistants” found in fancy supermarkets. In this case, the Giant Eagle “Market District” in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood. The concept is that one walks around with a beeper, beeping and bagging as-you-go. At the checkout, all that’s left to do is beep the barcode on it, approve [...]

Toshiba MID concept looks like offspring of Nintendo DS, iPhone and a very fat wallet

August 31st 2008

Toshiba’s “SD Multi Tool” prototype is more than the average iClone. Pitched as a mobile internet device (MID) it has dual 960×480-resolution touchscreen displays, a Micro-SD card slot, HDMI, a USB port and a headphone jack. It’s 11.6 centimeters long by 7.2 wide.
As clever as it is, I fear we’re looking at a $1,000 Nintendo [...]

Black MacBook Pro concept cuts air like the Air

August 31st 2008

Taking stock of recent rumors, Miguel Suárez squeezes the high-performing slab into an Air-like chassis in his wonderful design. The only thing that gives me pause is the simple fact that whatever such a thing could do, it would do more given the space afforded in a less radical form.

August 31st 2008

The fourth generation of the great Fujitsu 8.9-inch touch screen Tablet PC has hit the FCC according to our friends at jkkmobile.  The P1630 looks to be another incremental refresh with nothing major changing other than an updating of the processor.  The P1620 is still one of the best mobile computers I have owned and [...]

The TechCrunch Tablet is now a prototype

August 31st 2008

TechCrunch started a big buzz with their call for a $200 web tablet that they started as a real project to get built.  Things quickly got awfully quiet for a while and speculation grew that it was just another hopeful idea that wouldn’t see the light of day.  Today Michael Arrington laid that speculation to [...]

Samsung X360 - Lighter Than Air Notebook

August 31st 2008

The Samsung X360 is pretty impressive.
Its size and weight (very light and very thin) and is ready to taunt the MacBook Air.
It has a 13.3-inch, 1200 x 800 pixel screen and by all reports is also very good.
It’s also all ported up, more so than Apple’s notebook: direct HDMI out, three USB ports, Express Card [...]

See Through Dual Touch Display

August 31st 2008

Just check this out.
Take the idea of the iPhone-style touch navigation and then times that by two.
This totally cool dual-sided transparent touch display from Teraokaseiko is definitely on the right track.
Perhaps someday it will develop beyond wicked games of, Naughts and Crosses, Battleship and Connect 4.
At the moment it’s just a monochrome 256 x 120 [...]
